How Does Your Physical Health Affect Your Mental Wellbeing?

Physical health and mental wellbeing go hand in hand, forming the foundation of our overall wellness. Research has shown that those who have a long-term physical health condition have a higher chance of experiencing mental health issues. Conversely, those who have a severe mental illness have double the usual risk of a fatal cardiovascular disease and four times the usual risk of a fatal respiratory disease. They are also statistically more likely to be overweight or obese.


Taking care of our physical health is crucial for maintaining our mental wellbeing. Regular exercise has been shown to reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. We need to make time for activities that we enjoy, whether it's going for a walk in nature, practising meditation or yoga, or hitting the gym. Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, and drinking plenty of water can also have a positive impact on our mood and energy levels. Adequate sleep is essential for both physical and mental health, so aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. By prioritising our physical health, we are taking a proactive step towards improving our mental wellbeing.


However, it's equally important to prioritise our mental wellbeing by managing stress, practising self-care, and seeking support when needed. Engaging in activities that promote relaxation and mindfulness, such as 7:11 diaphragmatic breathing, meditation or yoga, can help reduce anxiety and improve mental clarity.


By paying attention to both our physical health and mental wellbeing, we can create a harmonious balance that supports our holistic wellness and enhances our quality and longevity of life. Remember, taking small steps each day towards self-care of our body and mind can make a big difference in how we feel both physically and mentally.
